Global Issues and Challenges in Human Resource Management

Organizations existing with a set of goals to be achieved.  No matter profit oriented or service oriented, small or big organization; people play a crucial role in achieving organizational goals and objectives effectively and efficiently.

Beginning with a very unpretentious start as “people management” in 1700s human resource management has evolved to become an essential role in managing an organization. HRM move away from earlier personnel management models in relation to its focus, its principles, and its applications. HRM can be simply described as the convergence of three factors- human beings, resources, and management – where human beings have the definite and potential assets as knowledge, skills, and capabilities; that can be harnessed through effective management techniques to attain short-term and long-term organizational objectives and individual desires. (Rotich, 2015)

According to Armstrong (2006), HRM is described as a strategic and comprehensible methodology to the management of an organization's most treasured assets- the people employed there who individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of its objectives. Consequently, we can presume that HRM is a function of organizations designed to maximize employee performance in service of their employer’s strategic objectives (Johanson, 2009).

HR manager plays a vital role which will directly influence the day to day activity of an organization. He or she has to think out of the box in HR functions, keeping the “Human factor” in forefront of all events. HRM functions can be classified into two as managerial functions and operative functions. Managerial functions involve HR planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. These functions impact the operative functions and also they are inter-reliant.The operative functions of HR are concerned with recruitment, health, and safety, employee relations, compensation and benefits, labor law compliance, training, and development in order to satisfy and retain employee turnover. (Pravin,2010)

HRM becoming a challenging theme. As Ulrich (1998) mention, environmental and contextual changes, and globalization present a number of competitive challenges to organizations. It is critical to HR managers to function in every perspective.

The global issues and challenges and in HR will be discussed in the next blog.
